Our approach

Oxford Brookes University, located in the South East of England, is renowned for its teaching excellence and innovation. To maintain its status, the university has focused on providing sleek, easy-to-use digital educational services2. Over the past five years, it has revised its strategy to enhance the student experience through technology, aiming to become a leader in online learning

The university operates five IT departments under a centralized directorate, constantly evolving its digital services. Six years ago, Oxford Brookes decided to implement a new VLE, Moodle, to replace its previous system. This decision was driven by feedback from staff and students who found the old system inflexible.

After evaluating various options, the university chose Moodle and partnered with CoSector – University of London for its implementation and hosting. The transition took nine months and involved multiple integrations. The partnership has since evolved, with CoSector providing ongoing technical support and advice.

The Moodle platform has become a key service at Oxford Brookes, integrated into nearly all areas of the university. The relationship with CoSector has highlighted the benefits of external hosting, proving to be more reliable than in-house services. The university’s digital services have received high approval rates, with a recent survey showing nearly 90% satisfaction in online learning

Oxford Brookes continues to push for digital transformation, using CoSector as a benchmark for other service deliveries. The partnership has been crucial in achieving a flexible and usable VLE, essential for the university’s teaching and learning strategy.

When I analyse the data of the CoSector service against other internal services, I can now evidence to others that outsourced hosting can be more reliable than when we do it in-house.
