Our approach

The University of Plymouth, established in 1862, is one of the UK’s largest universities, known for its innovative approach to education. To align with its vision of becoming an “edgeless university,” where students and staff can interact entirely digitally if they choose, Plymouth decided to overhaul its digital learning environment (DLE).

Five years ago, the university began examining its existing learning systems, which were built in-house and lacked standardization. The goal was to create a unified system that would support the university’s digital strategy. Paul Westmore, IT Director at the University of Plymouth, emphasized the need for a complete product rather than a custom-built solution due to limited expertise in learning environments.

The university sought a DLE that would encompass all components of the student experience, allowing access to lectures, course materials, submission of work, and interaction with peers and faculty through a single online system. The solution needed to be available on multiple platforms, including mobile, to ensure accessibility and convenience.

After a thorough evaluation process, Plymouth selected CoSector – University of London to implement and support the hosting of Moodle, a widely-used virtual learning environment (VLE). CoSector’s extensive experience in delivering high-quality, cost-effective IT and digital solutions made them the ideal partner. Their Digital Services team has over 50 years of experience, serving more than one million higher and further education users.

The implementation of Moodle by CoSector has transformed Plymouth’s digital learning landscape, providing a reliable and integrated platform that meets the needs of students and staff. The partnership has proven successful, with CoSector offering ongoing technical support and advice, ensuring the DLE remains agile and responsive to new developments.

This strategic move has positioned the University of Plymouth as a leader in digital education, offering a seamless and comprehensive digital learning experience that aligns with its vision of an edgeless university

One of the key things that working with CoSector – University of London has enabled us to do, is provide what we think is an excellent learning environment with very little in the way of dedicated resources from the University itself

I think, fundamentally, because CoSector – University of London comes from the higher education sector, they really get it, they get what we are trying to do and they understand the constraints we are working within.
